Ration Card : Those who take free ration from the government will have to fight, the Food Minister has given a new order
smart ration card : Wheat harvesting will start after Holi and the government has set a target of purchasing 341.5 lakh tonnes of wheat this time. This figure is 153.6 lakh tonnes more than last year’s 187.9 lakh tonnes. To achieve this goal, a meeting was held with the Food Secretaries of different states. During this, Union Food Minister Piyush Goyal appealed to all the state governments to implement the ‘Smart-PDS’ system as soon as possible. Actually, after the full implementation of this system, any member of the family will be able to take ration by showing ‘smart ration card’.

Earlier, for the year 2023-24, a target of procurement of 341.5 lakh tonnes of wheat was set by the government. This target was fixed in a meeting with the food secretaries of the states to discuss the procurement arrangements. During this the meeting was presided over by Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra. The meeting was organized on the sidelines of the State Food Ministers’ Conference. The Food Ministry said in a statement that in the total wheat procurement target for the year 2022-23 (April-March), Punjab will target 25 lakh tonnes, Haryana 15 lakh tonnes and Madhya Pradesh 20 lakh tonnes.
There was a decrease in wheat procurement last year
Let us tell you that due to the decline in domestic production and more exports, there was a decrease in the procurement of wheat last year. According to the second estimate of the Ministry of Agriculture, the production of wheat in the crop year 2023-24 (July-June) is estimated to be a record 112.2 million tonnes. Apart from wheat, the government has set a target of 106 lakh tonnes of rabi (winter) rice procurement in the year 2022-23. The procurement of coarse grains is estimated to be 7.5 lakh tonnes this year.
What is Smart-PDS System
Smart-PDS is a system where Smart Ration Cards are issued to the beneficiaries of the Public Distribution System. Ration is given through ration shops on showing smart ration card by any member of the beneficiary family.
